Guyana entry requirements for visitors
What visitors need to enter Guyana: who is visa-exempt, length of stay, passport validity, the yellow fever certificate rule and where to check official guidance.
St George's Cathedral, Georgetown
In short
Many nationalities, including citizens of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, can visit Guyana as tourists without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from arrival, and a yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk.
Entry rules change, and they depend on your nationality, so treat this page as an orientation and confirm the details with official sources for your passport before you book flights. We remind every traveler to check this in their proposal, but we cannot give official immigration advice.
Visas
Guyana allows visa-free tourist visits for citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and many others in Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. Travelers from countries that are not exempt need to apply for a visa before travelling.
The length of stay is granted on arrival and differs by nationality. The UK government, for example, says British visitors can normally stay for 30 days and apply for extensions. Do not assume that a visa-free visit automatically covers a long trip.
Passport validity
Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival. Make sure it has free pages for entry stamps, particularly if you plan to cross into Brazil or Suriname.
Yellow fever
Guyana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from travelers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission, including some transit situations. Separately, health authorities recommend the vaccine for most travelers to Guyana because of the risk in the interior. See health and packing and speak to a travel clinic well before your trip.
Arriving
At Cheddi Jagan International Airport you pass through immigration and customs. Have your accommodation details, return or onward ticket and itinerary to hand; officials may ask about your plans. Your proposal includes the details you need.
Crossing land borders
Lethem connects by bridge to Bonfim in Brazil, and ferries cross the Corentyne River to Suriname. Each crossing involves both countries’ formalities and entry rules. Official advice warns against unofficial river crossings, so tell us early if a crossing is part of your plans.
Where to check
- Your own government’s travel advice for Guyana (for example, the US State Department or UK FCDO).
- The nearest Guyanese embassy, high commission or consulate.
- Your airline, for transit requirements on your route.
Questions travelers ask
Do US citizens need a visa for Guyana?
US citizens do not need a visa for a tourist visit. The permitted stay is granted by the immigration officer on arrival, so check the current US State Department country page before you travel.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccination?
A certificate is required if you arrive from, or have transited through, a country with yellow fever transmission risk, under rules that set age and transit-time thresholds. Separately, health authorities such as the US CDC recommend the vaccine for most travelers to Guyana. Ask a travel clinic.
Can I extend my stay?
Extensions can be applied for through Guyana’s immigration services. Plan ahead if your trip is long or combines several countries.
