Best time to visit Guyana

When to visit Guyana: coastal and interior rainy seasons, the best months for wildlife and birding, Kaieteur in wet and dry seasons, festivals and booking lead times.

Open savannah in the Rupununi

In short

For most trips into the interior, the best time to visit Guyana is the dry season from roughly September to April, when tracks are easier and wildlife concentrates near water. The main wet season, broadly May to August, brings flooding in the Rupununi and more travel disruption.

Guyana is tropical and warm all year, so the question is not temperature but rain, and what rain does to rivers, tracks and wildlife. The coast and the interior follow different patterns, and most visitors spend most of their time in the interior.

The interior (Iwokrama and the Rupununi)

The interior has one main wet season, broadly May to August. Heavy rain floods large parts of the Rupununi savannah, rivers rise and some dirt tracks become slow or impassable. The dry season, roughly September to April, is the main travel season: rivers drop, sandbanks appear, wildlife gathers at remaining water and overland transfers are more predictable. August and September can still be muddy as the land dries out.

The coast (Georgetown)

The coast has two wet seasons: a main one from about May to mid-August and a shorter one from about December to January. Rain on the coast usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all day, so it rarely stops a city day, but it can affect flights.

Season by season

Months Interior What it means for your trip
September to November Dry, drying out early on Excellent for wildlife and overland travel; a strong all-round choice
December to January Dry inland, short wet season on the coast Good inland; holiday dates book early
February to April Dry, getting hotter Excellent for wildlife and birding; Easter brings the Rupununi Rodeo
May to August Main wet season Green, quiet, Kaieteur at full power; flooding and slower transfers

By interest

  • Wildlife (giant otters, caiman, anteaters): dry season, with low water concentrating animals.
  • Birding: good year-round; the dry season is easiest for access.
  • Kaieteur Falls: year-round; most water in the wet months.
  • Fishing for arapaima: low water in the dry season.
  • Ranch stays: dry season, when the savannah is passable.

Events worth planning around

  • Easter: the Rupununi Rodeo in Lethem, a major regional event.
  • September: Amerindian Heritage Month, with events across the country.
  • February: Mashramani, Guyana’s Republic anniversary celebrations, centred on Georgetown.

Booking lead times

Interior lodges have few rooms, and domestic flights use small aircraft. For dry-season travel, three to six months ahead gives you the widest choice. Easter, Christmas and the main northern-hemisphere holiday periods fill first. Short-notice trips are often still possible with flexibility on lodges and dates.

Questions travelers ask

Is it worth visiting Guyana in the rainy season?

It can be, if you are flexible. Landscapes are green, Kaieteur is at its most powerful and there are fewer visitors. But the Rupununi floods, some tracks close and wildlife is harder to find, so we plan wet-season trips around what is reliably accessible.

When is the best time for Kaieteur Falls?

Any time. The falls are biggest in the wet months, while flying conditions are generally more predictable in the drier months. We plan Kaieteur early and, where the route allows, keep the following day flexible.

How far ahead should I book?

Interior lodges are small, so three to six months ahead is sensible for the dry season and holiday periods. Easter (the Rupununi Rodeo) and Christmas fill earliest. Shorter notice can work, with fewer choices.
