Rupununi wildlife in 10 days

A 10-day Guyana wildlife itinerary through Iwokrama, Surama, Karanambu and Caiman House: giant otters, anteaters, black caiman, canopy birds and realistic transfers.

Sunset over the Rupununi River near Karanambu

In short

Ten days lets you follow the wildlife: rainforest at Iwokrama, savannah and forest at Surama, then giant otters and anteaters at Karanambu and black caiman at Yupukari, flying back from the Rupununi.

The route, stage by stage

Illustrative itinerary, not a fixed package. Flight days and times, transfer times, lodge availability and prices are subject to confirmation for your dates. Your written proposal sets them out before you commit.

  1. Day 1

    Georgetown

Arrive and transfer to your hotel.

  2. Days 2 to 3

    Iwokrama River Lodge

By road through the interior (most of Day 2) or by flight to Annai, subject to schedule, and a transfer north. Boat trips on the Essequibo, Turtle Mountain and night walks.

  3. Day 4

    Canopy walkway (Atta)

Afternoon and dawn on the canopy walkway; roadside wildlife at dusk.

  4. Days 5 to 6

    Surama

Community guides, Surama Mountain at sunrise, the Burro Burro River for otters and birds, harpy eagle nest visit if one is active.

  5. Days 7 to 8

    Karanambu

Transfer south. River trips at dawn and dusk for giant otters and black caiman, savannah walks for giant anteaters, giant water lilies at dusk.

  6. Day 9

    Yupukari (Caiman House)

Village visit and, when the programme allows, an evening with the caiman research team.

  7. Day 10

    Georgetown

Transfer to the airstrip that suits the flight schedule on your date (often Lethem, a few hours by road) and fly back to Georgetown. Final night in the city.

  8. Flying home

    International departure

International departure on day 11, after the final night in Georgetown, so a delayed domestic flight does not cost you your connection.

Needs booking well ahead

  • Domestic flights (scheduled or charter) into and out of the Rupununi
  • Rooms at Karanambu, Surama and Caiman House (few rooms each)
  • Specialist guiding if you have photography or species targets

This itinerary is built around the animals rather than the sights. Every stop is chosen for its wildlife, and every base gets at least two dawns or dusks so that good sightings are likely rather than lucky.

How the route flows

The trip runs north to south through the interior, from closed rainforest to open savannah, so you never backtrack. Iwokrama gives you forest birds and the chance of big cats along the road; Surama adds forest edge and savannah with community guides; Karanambu and Yupukari give you the river wildlife the Rupununi is famous for.

Wildlife you can realistically hope to see

  • Very likely with good guides: giant otters, black caiman, capybara, many savannah and river birds, giant water lilies.
  • Likely: giant anteater on the savannah, monkeys in the forest, cock-of-the-rock or other forest specialities.
  • Possible: harpy eagle at an active nest, tapir, jaguar.

Sightings are never guaranteed. Time and season matter more than anything else, which is why this route favours fewer, longer stays.

Transfers

Expect a mix of road, river and light aircraft. Road sections between Iwokrama, Surama and Karanambu run on unpaved tracks, with travel times that depend on season. The final flight to Georgetown may leave from Lethem or another airstrip, depending on schedules on your dates. Transfer times between lodges are estimates until confirmed for your season. Your proposal lists every transfer and who provides it.

Season

The dry season, roughly September to April, is best: water levels drop, animals concentrate and tracks are easier. In the wet season (broadly May to August) some transfers lengthen, and river wildlife is harder to find. See the best time to visit.

Questions travelers ask

Could I add Kaieteur Falls?

Yes. Add a day in Georgetown at the start for the Kaieteur flight. It also gives a buffer before you head into the interior.

Can I swap Iwokrama for Rewa?

Yes, if you are keen on fishing or want a more remote river stay. Rewa needs at least three nights because of the boat journey, so the trip becomes 11 or 12 days.
