Guyana, the way you travel

The same country suits very different trips. These guides set out what to prioritise and what to watch for, depending on who you are and why you are going.

First trip to Guyana

Guyana for first-time visitors

On a first visit, aim for Kaieteur Falls, one rainforest stay and one savannah stay in about a week, with a night in Georgetown at each end. Expect simple, comfortable lodges, early starts and logistics that need buffers.

Watch for: Trying to see everything in a few days. Interior transfers take time, so a first trip works best with three areas at most.

Birders

Guyana for birdwatchers

Guyana suits birders who want Guiana Shield specialities in quiet, lightly visited sites. Plan around habitats, give each forest site at least two dawns, and decide early whether you want a dedicated bird guide or skilled local guides at each lodge.

Watch for: Transfers that eat the best morning hours. We schedule long journeys for the middle of the day or replace them with flights.

Wildlife photographers

Guyana for wildlife photographers

Guyana gives photographers giant otters, giant anteaters, black caiman and canopy birds in uncrowded settings. The constraints are low forest light, humidity and strict baggage limits on small aircraft, so plan gear and flights early.

Watch for: Baggage weight on light aircraft. Heavy camera kits can need extra paid weight or a road transfer instead.

Comfort and private travel

Comfort-focused and private trips in Guyana

Guyana has no luxury safari camps, but a trip can still be very comfortable: the best rooms at each lodge, charter flights instead of long road days, private guides and vehicles, and good Georgetown hotels at each end.

Watch for: Expecting resort luxury inland. Comfort in the interior means good rooms, great guiding and short transfers, not air conditioning and spas.
