Guyana for birdwatchers

Planning a birding trip to Guyana: habitats, target species, guiding options, the canopy walkway, optics, seasons and keeping transfers out of the best hours.

In short

Guyana suits birders who want Guiana Shield specialities in quiet, lightly visited sites. Plan around habitats, give each forest site at least two dawns, and decide early whether you want a dedicated bird guide or skilled local guides at each lodge.

Birders come to Guyana for a combination that is hard to find elsewhere: Guiana Shield specialities, intact habitats from coast to savannah, and sites where you may be the only birding group for days.

How we plan birding trips

  • By habitat: coast, plateau, lowland forest, canopy, forest edge, wetland and savannah.
  • By dawn: at least two mornings at each forest site.
  • By light: long transfers in the middle of the day, or by air.
  • By target: if you have a list, we plan around it and tell you honestly what is realistic.

Guiding

Lodges in Iwokrama, Surama and the Rupununi have local guides with excellent field skills, many of whom know calls and nest sites intimately. For a focused trip, a dedicated bird guide who travels with you adds continuity and targeted searching. Your proposal states the arrangement.

Practicalities

  • Bring good binoculars and, for the savannah, a scope if you use one.
  • Protect optics from humidity and rain.
  • Expect early starts, heat by mid-morning and a rest in the middle of the day.

Questions travelers ask

Can you plan around a target list?

Yes. Send us your targets and we will tell you which are realistic, where and when, and which need specialist arrangements or extra days.

Is Guyana good for bird photography?

Very, especially from the canopy walkway and on the savannah. Light in the forest is low, so fast lenses help, and small-aircraft baggage limits need planning for heavy gear.
