In short
Twelve days covers Guyana’s main bird habitats, from coastal wetlands and Kaieteur to the Iwokrama canopy, the North Rupununi forest edge and the open savannah, with repeated dawns at each site.
The route, stage by stage
Illustrative itinerary, not a fixed package. Flight days and times, transfer times, lodge availability and prices are subject to confirmation for your dates. Your written proposal sets them out before you commit.
- Day 1
Georgetown
Arrive and transfer to your hotel.
- Day 2
Kaieteur Falls
Flight to Kaieteur for plateau birds and, with luck, Guianan cock-of-the-rock near the trail.
- Day 3
Georgetown and coast
Early morning at the Botanical Gardens, then the Mahaica River for hoatzin and coastal species. If the Kaieteur flight moved, this is its backup day and the coastal birding shifts around it.
- Days 4 to 5
Iwokrama River Lodge
Into the rainforest: river edges, forest trails and night birds.
- Days 6 to 7
Canopy walkway (Atta)
Two dawns on the canopy walkway, plus birding along the road through the forest.
- Day 8
Surama
One night of forest-edge and savannah birding; add a second night if a harpy eagle nest is active.
- Days 9 to 10
Karanambu
Savannah, wetland and river birding by boat and on foot; jabiru and waterbirds.
- Days 11 to 12
South Rupununi and back to Georgetown
Savannah specialities in the South Rupununi with local guides, then on Day 12 fly from Lethem to Georgetown for a final night.
- Flying home
International departure
International departure on day 13, after the final night in Georgetown.
Needs booking well ahead
- A dedicated bird guide for the whole trip, if you want one
- Domestic flights, including Kaieteur and the return from Lethem
- Two consecutive nights near the canopy walkway
This itinerary is for birders who want to see Guyana properly: every major habitat, enough dawns at each forest site, and flights where the alternative would cost a morning’s birding.
Habitat by habitat
- Coast: gardens, canals and mangrove-fringed rivers for hoatzin, parrots and waterbirds.
- Kaieteur plateau: a distinctive set of species on a short visit, combined with the falls.
- Lowland rainforest: Iwokrama’s river edges and trails.
- Canopy: two dawns on the walkway, where canopy flocks pass at eye level.
- Forest edge and savannah: Surama, with the chance of harpy eagle.
- Wetland and river: Karanambu’s ponds and the Rupununi River.
- Open savannah: the South Rupununi, including species with very restricted ranges in Guyana.
Guiding options
You can bird with each lodge’s local guides, many of whom are excellent, or add a dedicated bird guide who travels with you throughout. The second option costs more but gives continuity and targeted help. Tell us your target list and we will tell you honestly which approach suits it.
Pace
This is an active trip: very early starts, long mornings in the field and some long transfers. Afternoons are kept for rest or relaxed birding near the lodge. It suits fit travelers comfortable with heat and simple lodges.
Tailoring it
- Add Orinduik Falls to the Kaieteur day by charter (quoted for your date).
- Swap Surama for a longer Iwokrama stay if canopy birds are your priority.
- Extend in the South Rupununi for savannah specialities.

Questions travelers ask
Is twelve days enough for a serious birder?
It covers the main habitats well. Serious listers often add days at Iwokrama or in the South Rupununi, or extend to the Pakaraima foothills for further specialities.
Will a specialist bird guide join the whole trip?
That is possible and we can quote it. Otherwise you bird with skilled local guides at each lodge, which works well for many travelers.
