Georgetown: Guyana’s capital and your gateway
What Georgetown offers travelers: wooden colonial architecture, markets, the seawall, manatees and day trips, plus how long to stay and how it fits a Guyana itinerary.
Stabroek Market and its clock tower, central Georgetown
In short
Georgetown is where nearly every Guyana trip starts and ends. One or two days is enough for its colonial architecture, markets and food, and the city doubles as the buffer you need around interior flights.
Georgetown sits below sea level behind a long Atlantic seawall, laid out by Dutch and later British colonists on a grid of drainage canals. It is not a polished tourist city, and that is part of its interest: white-painted wooden buildings, busy markets, Indian, African, Chinese, Portuguese and Indigenous influences in the food, and a pace that changes completely on a Sunday evening along the seawall.
What to see in a day
- St George’s Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden church buildings in the world, built in the 1890s.
- Stabroek Market and its iron clock tower, the city’s busiest commercial hub. Go with a guide and keep valuables out of sight.
- The Botanical Gardens, where West Indian manatees live in the canals and the birding is surprisingly good early in the morning.
- The seawall, a promenade that fills with families and food stalls at weekends.
- Museums and markets, including the National Museum and Bourda Market, depending on your interests.
A guided half day covers the highlights. A full day adds lunch somewhere local, a market walk and time in the gardens.
Day trips from Georgetown
Georgetown is a practical base for short excursions when you have a spare day. Popular options include river trips on the Demerara and Essequibo rivers, birding along the Mahaica River where the hoatzin (Guyana’s national bird) is often seen, and a rum distillery visit. Kaieteur Falls is also a day trip from the city by air; see Kaieteur Falls.
Why Georgetown matters to your itinerary
Interior flights are small, weather-dependent and occasionally rescheduled. Having a night in Georgetown before and after the interior gives an itinerary a buffer. We recommend:
- A night after your international arrival, because most flights arrive in the afternoon or evening and interior flights leave in the morning.
- A day for the city or for Kaieteur.
- A final night after the interior, so a delayed domestic flight does not cost you your international connection.
Staying in Georgetown
Georgetown has international chain hotels, comfortable mid-range hotels and smaller guesthouses. We choose accommodation for location, security, quality of sleep before early flights and value, and your proposal names the hotel. Expect city-level comfort here; interior lodges are more rustic.
Getting around
Use arranged transfers or reputable taxis booked through your hotel rather than hailing cars on the street. The drive from Cheddi Jagan International Airport takes roughly an hour depending on traffic. For more, read getting around Guyana and our safety guide.
Questions travelers ask
Is Georgetown worth a full day?
Yes, if you enjoy architecture, markets and food. The centre is compact, and a guided half or full day lets you see St George’s Cathedral, Stabroek Market, the Botanical Gardens and the seawall without worrying about getting around.
Should I stay near the airport?
Usually not. Most hotels and restaurants are in Georgetown itself, and domestic flights to Kaieteur and the Rupununi leave from Ogle on the city side. A Timehri hotel can make sense only for very late arrivals or early international departures.
Is Georgetown safe to walk around?
Guyana has a high crime rate and governments advise care in Georgetown, especially after dark and around banks and ATMs. We arrange transfers and suggest guided exploring for first visits. See our safety guide for the details.
