Getting around Guyana: flights, roads and rivers
How travel works in Guyana: international arrivals, domestic flights from Ogle, the Georgetown to Lethem road, river transfers, baggage limits and realistic travel times.

In short
Inside Guyana you travel by light aircraft from Ogle airport, by 4x4 or minibus on the long, partly unpaved road to Lethem, and by boat on the rivers. Most good itineraries mix all three, with flights saving the longest journeys.
Guyana’s population lives mostly on a narrow coastal strip; the interior is forest, savannah and rivers with very few roads. Getting around is part of the adventure, and getting the logistics right is most of what makes a Guyana trip work.
Arriving in Guyana
Most international flights land at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) at Timehri, south of Georgetown, with connections from North America, the Caribbean and Panama among others. The drive to Georgetown takes about an hour. Official advice is to avoid the airport road late at night and before dawn where possible, and to use pre-booked transfers. We arrange your arrival transfer as standard.
Domestic flights
Interior flights leave from Ogle airport (OGL) on the east side of Georgetown, not from the international airport. Small aircraft serve airstrips across the interior, including Kaieteur, Annai, Karanambu and Lethem, on a mix of scheduled services and charters.
- Scheduled flights run on set days to some airstrips, and may make intermediate stops.
- Charters go where and when you need, priced per aircraft.
- Baggage is limited by weight, and travelers may be weighed with their bags. Pack a soft bag and leave extra luggage in Georgetown.
- Delays happen for weather and operational reasons. Itineraries need buffers.
The road south
The main interior road runs from Georgetown via Linden through the Iwokrama Forest to Lethem on the Brazilian border. Paved sections give way to laterite (red dirt), with a river crossing at Kurupukari on the Essequibo. Parts of the road are being upgraded, so conditions vary year to year. Travel times depend heavily on season and vehicle; this is a long day or more, not an afternoon.
Overland travel is the way to see the change from forest to savannah, and to stop for wildlife at dawn and dusk in the Iwokrama Forest. Flying saves time and energy. We compare them in fly or drive to the Rupununi.
Rivers
Some places, including Rewa, are reached by boat, and river trips are central to wildlife watching. Journey times depend on water levels: the same trip can take very different times in the wet and dry seasons. Use registered operators with life jackets, and avoid boat travel after dark, as official advice also recommends.
Within Georgetown
Use pre-booked transfers or reputable taxis arranged through your hotel rather than hailing cars on the street. Minibuses are cheap but not recommended for visitors carrying luggage.
How we handle logistics
Your proposal lists every transfer, flight and boat journey, who provides it, and the realistic time it takes. If a flight moves or a road is slow, we work with you and the people on the ground to adjust the plan.
Questions travelers ask
Can I drive myself in Guyana?
Self-driving into the interior is not something we recommend. Roads are unpaved for long stretches, signage is limited, help is far away and conditions change with the weather. Experienced local drivers make the journey safer and more enjoyable.
Are domestic flights safe?
Domestic flights are operated by local airlines and charter companies flying small aircraft to grass and laterite airstrips. Like all light-aircraft travel in remote regions, they carry more risk than major airlines. We plan with established, licensed operators and, where the route allows, build in time so nobody is pressured to fly in bad weather.
How long is the drive from Georgetown to Lethem?
Expect a very long day: published estimates range from about 10 hours to well over 16, depending on vehicle, season, road works and the river crossing at Kurupukari. In the wet season it can take longer.
