Rainforest and savannah in 7 days
A one-week Guyana itinerary: Kaieteur Falls, a community lodge at Surama, the Iwokrama canopy walkway and River Lodge, with clear notes on transfers and flight risk.
The view from Surama Mountain over the village and savannah
In short
One week gives you Kaieteur Falls, two nights at Surama on the savannah edge and two nights in the Iwokrama rainforest, including dawn on the canopy walkway, with your flight home on day 8. A strong starting point for a first visit.
The route, stage by stage
Illustrative itinerary, not a fixed package. Flight days and times, transfer times, lodge availability and prices are subject to confirmation for your dates. Your written proposal sets them out before you commit.
- Day 1
Georgetown
Arrive and transfer to your hotel.
- Day 2
Kaieteur Falls
Fly from Ogle to Kaieteur (the weekend scheduled tour, or a charter on other days) for around two hours at the falls, then back to Georgetown in the late afternoon.
- Days 3 to 4
Surama
Morning flight from Ogle to Annai (subject to the flight schedule for your dates), transfer to Surama. Dawn climb of Surama Mountain, canoeing on the Burro Burro River, forest walks and time in the village with community guides.
- Day 5
Canopy walkway (Atta)
Drive north into the Iwokrama Forest. Late afternoon and the following dawn on the canopy walkway; roadside wildlife watching at dusk.
- Day 6
Iwokrama River Lodge
Continue to the Essequibo at Kurupukari. River trip at dusk for caiman and birds; Turtle Mountain if time and energy allow.
- Day 7
Georgetown
Return to Georgetown: a full day by road, or back to Annai for a flight if one operates that day. Night in Georgetown.
- Flying home
International departure
Your international flight leaves on day 8, after the night in Georgetown. A same-day connection after an interior transfer is too risky to plan.
Needs booking well ahead
- Kaieteur flight seats
- Domestic flight to Annai
- Rooms at Surama and the canopy walkway area (small lodges, limited rooms)
- Road transfers through the Iwokrama Forest
This route shows the three faces of Guyana most visitors come for: the falls, the savannah and the rainforest. It keeps the number of moves reasonable and uses one flight and one long road journey so you see the interior from the air and from the ground.
The logic of the route
- Kaieteur first, while you are still based in Georgetown.
- Fly to Annai rather than drive, to save a long day early in the trip.
- Surama for two nights, because one night gives you only one dawn.
- Canopy walkway overnight, so you are on it at first light.
- Iwokrama River Lodge last, closest to the road back to Georgetown.
The Kaieteur risk, plainly
Kaieteur flights can be postponed for weather or low passenger numbers, and in this version of the route the next day is the flight into the interior. If the Day 2 flight does not operate, the fallback options are limited: a charter that stops at Kaieteur on the way to Annai, at extra cost and subject to aircraft and weather, or an extra day at the end of the trip. If Kaieteur is a must-see for you, we suggest adding a day in Georgetown after Day 2, which turns this into a genuine 8-day route with a real backup.
Pace and comfort
The pace is moderate: early starts for wildlife, a rest in the heat of the day and some walking, including the optional climbs of Surama Mountain and Turtle Mountain. Lodges are comfortable but simple, with fans, set meals and limited connectivity. Light aircraft have tight baggage limits, so you travel with a soft bag and leave the rest in Georgetown.
Variations
- Wildlife focus: replace the River Lodge with two nights at Karanambu for giant otters and anteaters, flying out from there. See the 10-day Rupununi wildlife itinerary.
- More comfort: shorter road transfers by adding a charter flight.
- More time: add a night anywhere. The extra dawn always pays off.
What needs confirming for your dates
Domestic flight days to Annai, road conditions through the Iwokrama Forest, the Kurupukari crossing and lodge availability all vary by date and season. They are confirmed before we send your proposal, and the proposal states any timing you should treat as approximate.
Season notes
In the dry season (roughly September to April) roads and trails are easier and wildlife concentrates near water. In the main wet season (broadly May to August) the route is usually still possible, but road sections can be slow and some activities change.
Costs
The main cost drivers are the Kaieteur flight, the domestic flight to Annai, road transfers through the forest and full-board lodges with guiding. Our trip cost guide explains how these add up. Your proposal shows a single total with inclusions, exclusions and payment terms.
Questions travelers ask
Is the drive back to Georgetown very long?
Yes. From Kurupukari it is a full day on a road that is partly unpaved and includes a river crossing. Some travelers enjoy seeing the country; others prefer to return to Annai and fly, if a flight operates that day. We price both.
Can I fly home on Day 7?
Not safely. Day 7 is spent coming back from the interior, so the route includes a night in Georgetown and an international departure on day 8.
What if the Kaieteur flight is cancelled?
This route has no free day after Kaieteur, because Day 3 is the flight into the interior. The options are a charter that stops at Kaieteur on the way to Annai (extra cost, subject to aircraft and weather) or an extra day at the end. If Kaieteur is essential to you, add a day before Day 3 from the start.
